Why “Drunken Unicorn”?
In bourbon culture, a unicorn is the rare bottle, the one that’s impossible to find. That’s part of it.
But the real unicorn is the pour that speaks to you. Not the one everyone else is chasing. Yours. The bottle that matches your palate, your moment and your story.
You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on a bottle someone else calls amazing. We walk you through how to taste, so you can find your own. The pursuit is the point.
Meet John and Shauna.
Shauna N. Hann
Co-Founder · Director of Education
Shauna has taught in some of the most demanding classrooms in the country. She was an Assistant Professor at West Point and at the Army’s Command and General Staff College, where she was named 2025 Department Educator of the Year, and she directed the course that prepares battalion and brigade commanders to take command.
A published historian of early American tavern culture, she trained her palate first with a viticulture minor at UC Davis. She is a 2026 Bourbon Women SIP Fellow, the lead instructor and curriculum architect of the Find Your Unicorn class series, and a retired military officer.
John Schuster II
Co-Founder · Director of Brand Programs
John has trained his palate for thirty years, starting in a professional kitchen under an executive chef who taught him to blend for the taste, not the recipe. A retired military officer with 26+ years of military service, he designed adult education for the Army Logistics University and earned an MBA in Marketing and Data Analytics.
He writes the American Whiskey Industry Brief, a daily publication for the whiskey industry, hosts the Chasing the Unicorn podcast and built The Perfect Pour.
Husband and wife, they earned their Executive Bourbon Steward credentials in the same Stave & Thief Society class and have walked distillery floors together ever since. They started Drunken Unicorn so ordinary people with ordinary budgets can find their own Unicorn.
